"No Direction," your new record, is due out in March, less than a year after your last album "Wondering About The Weather." Were these tunes you had on the shelf or are they all brand new?

JR: These are all brand new, written within the last year or so.

What was the process like for "No Direction"? Where did you record and what was the time frame?

JR: It was mostly written and recorded in my basement with the exception of the drums which were recorded at Rax Trax Recording.

You have an extensive background in jazz and classical music; what attacts you to Americana as a medium for your artistic expression?

JR:This is the kind of music that has always felt the most natural/fun for me to write and play.

You were born and raised in the Chicago area, correct? How has the city's history/present affected your music?

JR: There have been more than a few Chicago musicians in my family including my grandparents, so I have been involved in local music since I was a kid. I have been playing music professionally in Chicago for about 15 years and have performed everywhere from Symphony Center to The House of Blues to the Green Mill. So I'd say the place has had a profound effect- both for better and worse!

Your bio describes a musical lifetime. Can you speak to what drives you to keep creating over that kind of span?

JR: I've been doing it for so long that it would be hard not do anything, whether it's writing and recording, practicing or performing. I enjoy all of it, and equally as important, I've never had a real job. I play a lot of gigs in Chicago which allows me to spend a lot of time pursuing creative music.

Any release show or tour plans in place yet for "No Direction"?

JR: There are a bunch of tour dates announced for April/May on my website. I'm doing a solo run on the West Coast and a bunch of dates with the band in the Midwest. Chicago show TBA soon!

Lets talk the video for the title track. Where did you film it? Who directed it? Who is featured in the band and how many strings of christmas lights were required to get that gorgeous glow?

JR: The video was shot in my basement! It was filmed by Kyle Dunleavy (Rhapsody Productions), who brought the Christmas lights and strung them up in a very specific manner to get the exact glow.

Are there any local musicians or acts you think are being overlooked?

JR: Yes, I play with world class musicians in Chicago every weekend who are generally overlooked by the outside world. Check out the rapper, D2G.
