For our readers unfamiliar with The Still Tide, can you give us a bit of history?

AM: I'd been playing on my own out west for years but it wasn't until bouncing around Brooklyn in my mid-twenties and playing in other bands that I was finally able to form a band of my own. That's where the full band sound and identity really began and when it was time to leave NYC about five years ago I carried that with me to Denver and started rebuilding the project out there. I'd learned so much from that time in the city and from touring heavily as a guitar tech that with the space and community we found in Colorado we were able to just hit the ground running. We found amazing people to collaborate with, started finding our feet in making records and just grew from there. Eventually we were headlining local shows, playing bigger stages and festivals and even toured out to Europe and back. I often still play out as a solo artist but love what we do as a full band; where the two overlap is what I love most.

Your new EP, Between Skies, was just announced for an early 2020 release. What can we expect from this latest work, compared to your last 3 EPs?

AM: I feel like this is the closest I've been to blending the full band experience with the more tender parts of my songwriting and guitar playing. I love the fun and power of playing with the band but my heart really lives in the quieter side of writing and in all these more delicate, intricate guitar ideas. I think trying to merge where the songs begin, usually playing alone in my apartment, with what I want them to feel like as a full band has been one of my favorite parts of writing over the last few years. The aim with this upcoming release was really just that  - I wanted to make people move and sway while also letting some of those more thoughtful lyrics and guitar melodies shine.

Your lyrics are quite powerful, made even more so by your passionate performances. When writing, do you start with the lyrics or the music?

AM: It totally depends on the song, but most often the music comes first and it takes me ages to wrestle the lyrics into shape. Truly ages, ha. I care so much about the words and being a bit of a perfectionist it takes many drafts and a lot of trial and error to get them right. Music comes so easily most of the time but the words - I really have to work at them.

Who are a few Denver artists you feel are overlooked?

AM: Too many bands to list, but I really do love the music our friends have been making - Porlolo, Bluebook, Whippoorwill, Down Time, Slow Caves, Wildermiss & Kyle Emerson are a few favorites.

What do you hope people walk away with after seeing one of your shows?

AM: As cheesy as it sounds, I hope they walk away with a sense of connection and belonging. I feel like every powerful musical experience I've had has made me feel like I wasn't alone somehow, like whatever weird thing I was feeling or weird thing I was, was something someone else had felt or been. Since I was a teen, no matter the genre, I felt most understood and like myself in listening to or playing music and it really changed how I moved through the world. I hope I can give that same feeling to someone else.

What’s next for you - will we get an LP in the future?

AM: Yes! That's definitely the goal for this next year! I'm already writing and assembling the players, so fingers crossed that we'll have that out in the world sooner than later.
