Ganser
(EP RElease)

The Knees

Record Breakers

November 2nd

Ganser / all đź“· : Kyle Land

In-store shows are always a treat: surrounded by the scent of vinyl, the musk of aged sleeves, and the magic of years old, much loved music, is the perfect environment for a release show.  Ganser’s EP release for You Must Be New Here last Saturday at Record Breakers was one of these particularly enjoyable evenings. A small crowd braved the early fall cold, filing into the no frills store along the stretch of yet to gentrified Milwaukee Ave. that borders Avondale and Logan Square to enjoy the post punk swagger of Ganser and the swirling math rock of opener The Knees.

If you’ve been paying attention to the local scene in the past two years, you’ve run across The Knees on several occasions. A double guitar attack helmed by David Miller and Wilson Brehmer; rounded out by the precession drumming of Davis Connors, and the rolling lines of Ben Goldman on bass, their math rock influenced indie was a perfect warm up. With a few singles under their belt, The Knees have barely scratched the surface of their capabilities and with a full album on the way soon, be on the lookout for the ebb and flow of their well rehearsed staccato guitar interplay.

Fresh off their stint at Riot Fest and a few shows to warm up for their EP release, the tight post punk squad Ganser took a few tunes to warm up but when they hit their stride, and Nadia Garofalo paces in front with the mic they take on an unstoppable energy. When the power of Alicia Gaines gaze catches you during her numbers your heart skips as she delivers her ranting diatribes as in the title track of the new EP You Must Be New Here as she chants: “Watch it all fall down.” The frenetic energy of Charlie Landsmans guitar courses across the tunes like a fuzz juggernaut, while Brain Cundiff holds down the middle with a plodding beat that screams 80s electro pop. Elements of New Wave, Noise, Punk, and Post Rock blend into a music stew that comes out all ready for instant consumption. Ganser is a Chicago powerhouse, who deserve far more attention than they’ve received. Get on over and purchase You Must Be New Here and support local music!
