New Releases We Can't Wait to Dig Into
There is no shortage of excellent music coming out this week. We have a couple of hometown heroes dropping albums as well. We’re super excited for Claude and Chris Crack to share the spotlight this week! We did come across a couple of gems from around the country, too, so scroll below and see who’s got us excited this week!
As we scan upcoming release lists, singles and endlessly scrolling through Instagram, we are still very much interested in hearing from you about Chicago music on the horizon.
Claude (Chicago)
Enactor EP
Side Hustle Records
With the new single, “Screen,” you get the full force of what Claude has to offer in her latest EP, Enactor. The waif-like flowing vocals pattering down an empty hallway, complimenting the muted percussions and guitar take you on a signature Claude-powered journey. To paraphrase her Bandcamp description of the EP, it’s an honest observation of self, existence, and the world as it is.
Chris Crack (Chicago)
Might Delete Later
Fools Gold
This week we also see Chicago rapper, Chris Crack releasing his first album on the Fools Gold record label, called Might Delete Later. The single “False Evidence Appearing Real'' illustrates his abilities to deliver lyrics with some real power.
Menahan Street Band (Brooklyn)
The Exciting Sounds of Menahan Street Band
Daptone Records
This band pulls from multiple backgrounds and genres to produce what could be some of the best music coming out of Daptone Records to date. They have three singles out ahead of this record and each provides a delicious romp through tidal waves of horns and drums, organ work that’ll melt your brain, and a wholly religious bass accompaniment. Of the three, “Midnight Morning” stands out. It’s a clever experimentation, with a borderline psychedelic sound harkening the soul.
Stretch Panic (Austin)
Glitter & Gore
Self Release
Stretch Panic is an all-girl, dork-wave, three-piece outta Austin. They are seriously hot shit, and it comes through with their newest single, “Ouija Boy.” By listening to some of their earlier stuff you can tell they had a little Aquabats in their diet growing up. Their sound is amped up rockin’ nerd-core, it’s great. Give ‘em a listen.
Sports (Tulsa)
Get a Good Look, Pt. 1
“The Look” was a single released in January by a Tulsa, OK band that is nothing short of fucking amazing. Sports have the rapid delivery of Scissor Sister and the pop appeal of Carley Rae Jepson. If the album is anything like the single, we’re all in for an ultra fun disco party.
Sanya N’Kanta (Charlotte,NC)
These Are The Days
Cash Hill Records\
This record is a chilled out acoustic jam from Jamaican born singer/songwriter Sanya N’Kanta. A self-described survivor, there is a subtle sense of struggle resounding throughout his work. It’s art like this that adds a silver lining to any grey cloud.
That’s it for this week, but some honorable mentions go to Tel Aviv rock band Borito. They have a killer throwback sound we’re sure you’ll enjoy. There’s also a really cool rock band out of Leeds, UK called Mush. They very well may be the new face of progressive rock coming out of Great Britain. That’s it for now. We’ll see you next Thursday with more outstanding picks.
It bears repeating, we want to cover Chicago music, so if you have something coming out, please submit it!
