Reckless Records was packed with young people crowded in and excited to get close to their fav pop punk prom queen. Hand clapping and singing brought riding the bus to high school marching band events to mind. Let's be clear, a Beach Bunny crowd is made of art, theatre, and band kids. Not so many jocks. While her music is universal, not everyone wants to be so painfully honest about their heartbreak and insecurities. Earlier Beach Bunny songs focused on heartbreak and social pressures. Tonight, we celebrated their new album, Honeymoon. Perfect for Valentine's Day as it is nine love songs, but don't worry- she is keeping the angst alive! (Check out my full album review for more details about the music).

The Reckless performance felt like a house show with everyone negotiating around the store furniture to find a good vantage point. Friends sat on the floor and chatted while they waited for the show. When Beach Bunny came out, the vibe got a bit more teen-frenzy, but the band made it feel like we were all friends. Lili Trifilio turned to the band with a ‘fuck it, let's wing it’ attitude that is hard not to love. Everything about this band is charming. The way they bounce and smile more to themselves and the music than the audience but are also blatantly excited with the way the audience connects to it. They blazed through songs new and old. "Promises," "Rearview," and "Cloud9" from the new album had quite a few people singing along, despite only coming out that day. The happy recognition of a fellow deep fan. When they returned to the familiar stuff, "Sports," and "Painkiller," Trifilio was confident that when she spun the mic to us we would pick up the slack with gusto. As BB went into their last song, Trifilio demanded more energy from the crowd, "Go crazy, we need more bouncing, like this corner over here. But don't break anything!"

I'm sure the crowd will give Beach Bunny a much more satisfying mosh pit at the sold out Metro show on Feb 22.
